Detailed anatomical knowledge of the abdomen is central in enabling the clinician to systematically assess patients with abdominal trauma and predict likely sites of injury.

The abdominal contents can be divided into:

  • The intra-abdominal structures
  • Retroperitoneal structures
  • The pelvic structures
