Case

You are coming to the end of a busy weekend day shift in the Emergency Department when the triage nurse comes through with a young male being restrained in a wheelchair. Hes accompanied by several police officers. Hes screaming and shouting expletives, threatening staff members and patients as he is wheeled past.

It is unclear why this patient has arrived at hospital. After being dropped off by his friends at the front door, he became increasingly agitated in the waiting room and nearby police officers offered their assistance.

When taken into a majors cubicle his threatening behaviour continues and he begins lashing out. Nurses are unable to get any observations. You notice him to be pouring in sweat and his pupils are dilated.  You suspect him to be under the influence of drugs. Four police officers are doing their best to restrain him, but he continues to struggle. It is unclear if he has any physical injuries.

How do you manage this patient?
