A 32-year-old decorator attends the Emergency Department (ED) having accidentally put his left hand through a pane of glass at work. He has sustained a puncture wound to the mid-forearm (see clinical image below). The patient reports an inability to extend the ring and little fingers from the position shown.
On assessing neurovascular status you note decreased sensation in the little finger and medial half of the ring finger.
