It is a busy night shift in your Emergency Department (ED).

An 8-month male infant is brought in by his distressed mother following a witnessed collapsing episode.

The mother states that while he was being held he stopped breathing and went blue and limp, afterwards he made a strange breathing noise and then started breathing again after about 40 seconds. He has recently had a cough and coryzal symptoms which have now resolved

He is otherwise a fit and healthy infant with normal growth and development. Born at term with no neonatal problems and immunisations are up to date.

On examination he is asleep but easily roused with normal observations and an unremarkable examination.
