Chemical Splashes and Burns to the Eye
Patients usually present with a history of being splashed or sprayed in the eye(s), either accidentally or with a liquid chemical or CS spray or ‘pepper spray’.
Assessment is usually very difficult due to reflex tearing and blepharospasm. The use of a local anaesthetic will ease pain and aid assessment, which may need to follow the immediate priority of eye irrigation for liquid chemicals.
