This session aims to give a brief overview of dental emergencies that may present in A&E, including aetiology, diagnosis and management. Topics covered include dental pain, dental abscesses, dental trauma and complications of dental treatment which may present in A&E. This session aims to also cover dental conditions that can mimic other medical conditions. This session does not cover the full scope of maxillofacial emergencies, but inevitably there is some cross over.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand common causes of dental pain
- Be able to take a concise history and examination for a patient with a dental emergency
- Be able to assess whether a patient requires an urgent admission regarding a dental emergency
- Be able to differentiate between deciduous teeth and adult teeth
To have an understanding into what complications can arise from dental treatment that might attend in A&E
