Advice regarding eye cleaning will resolve many cases of blepharitis. Application of a warm compress, then cleaning with cotton buds dipped in a dilute solution of sodium bicarbonate or mild (baby) shampoo, one to three times a day, is often effective. If there is evidence of superadded infection, then a course of topical antibiotic ointment (e.g. chloramphenicol) may be required.
It is important to consider precipitating causes, such as dry eyes; artificial tears may be of benefit in this situation.
Warn the patient that even once resolved, blepharitis will often recur.
