Peptic Ulcer Disease

Author: Craig Walker, Rajesh Chatha / Editor: Frances Balmer / Codes:  / Published: 04/05/2022

The nature of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is changing. The rapidly declining prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and the widespread use of potent anti-secretory drugs means that PUD has become substantially less prevalent than it was two decades ago. This is due to an increasingly ageing population with more comorbidities and who more commonly use ulcerogenic medication.

This is an up-to-date review of peptic ulcer disease pathophysiology, presentation, management and complications in the Emergency Department (ED).

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the pathophysiology of peptic ulcer disease
  • Understand how to investigate dyspepsia in the ED and the red flag features to look for
  • Learn how to manage peptic ulcer disease and associated complications in the emergency department
