Where there is a significant change in impedance, shadowing occurs due to a significant reduction in the amount of sound energy travelling beyond the reflecting structure.
Shadowing helps to characterise structures such as gallstones.
If the impedance difference is high enough, for example at a soft tissue/air interface, total attenuation occurs – all of the sound energy will be reflected and none transmitted to deeper structures.
