Hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic State (HHS) is a common presentation to the emergency department (ED). The presentation can mimic many other disease processes. The ED physician must be able to diagnose, appropriately investigate, initiate treatment, and manage complications.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Differentiate Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State (HHS) from other causes of acute illness
- Interpret the results of appropriate investigations in HHS
- Plan the initial management of a patient with HHS
- Anticipate complications of HHS and their management
- Evaluate the factors which contribute to the presentation, and response to treatment, of HHS
