The human body has evolved to work within a narrow, carefully maintained, core temperature range. As hypothermia develops, many organ systems stop working properly. The physiological effects of hypothermia mean that the management of cardiac arrest requires an altered approach.
After completing this session you will be able to:
- Recognise when hypothermia is a significant factor in cardiac arrest
- Modify standard advanced life support practice to the needs of the hypothermic patient
- Explain how to actively re-warm a patient
- Modify post-resuscitation care for the hypothermic patient.
